SuperCube Towers, 2017

SuperCube Towers (2017) stacks SuperCube ring formations into vertical structures. The rings are a result of the SuperCube system developed at Studio Olafur Eliasson between 2015 and 2017, where Reiner led the Advanced Geometries department: a ten-cube ring encircles a five-cube pattern but also interlocks by itself, i.e., without the central cluster. Because a ring closes on itself, it can be stacked. The digital tower models already existed in January 2017 and were built up in Grasshopper through April, and a triangular-tower variant followed in July: one was 3D-printed as a grey model, a vertical column of interlocking cubes with tetrahedral indentations. The study leaves its real questions open: How should stacked rings attach? And how far can vertical growth go before stability gives out? It sits alongside the paper's note that ring clusters might also be arranged radially, four of them interlocking along the edges of a golden rhombus, rather than only in a plane.
