Phi Stars, 2017

The Phi Stars study presents fractal tilings of T-Quanta modules arranged in icosahedral symmetry, based on Einar Thorsteinn's puzzle system, which has tetrahedral units that can be put together in different polyhedral structures. Tetrahedral shapes are added to get different geometrical configurations, and many of the forms correspond to stellations of the rhombic triacontahedron, even though the construction method is not the usual stellation process. Instead of extending the face planes, this approach constructs the form outwards by adding fractal modules.

The T-Quanta modules follow golden ratio subdivisions, so hierarchical arrangements are created, in which smaller tetrahedral elements aggregate to form larger polyhedral forms. The icosahedral organization determines the placement of the modules, and certain configurations result in stable geometric structures. As such, the fractal tiling approach produces star-like polyhedral forms through systematic addition of tetrahedrons.
