Sonic, 2019 – Thilo Frank x Phillip C. Reiner

Based on a periscopic arrangement of mirrors, this work is mounted on the brick wall of Dansekapellet. It is visible from both outside and inside as it rotates around the central axis of the courtyard. The periscope draws together interior and exterior sight lines: courtyard activity is reflected outward and the mirror assembly responds to changing daylight conditions. As part of the "Art in Architecture" program at Dansekapellet (Center for Dance and Performance), this work ties the courtyard to the street and the use of the building.

Research:
Mirror angles and positions were calculated so that when the mirror assembly is rotated, the periscope delivers a well-defined sight line from the courtyard to the outside (or the reverse). The rotation axis is aligned with the courtyard; the mirror configuration was optimized according to the geometry of the brick wall and the range of angles at which the installation is viewed. There is also the possibility of tying the lighting to time of day.
