Segment_Popenguine_23-02 (HSD-Edition), 2025 – Jeewi Lee x Phillip C. Reiner

Fragment moves Lee's sand work from sculpture into print: a screen-print edition of 32 plus two artist proofs, signed and numbered on the back, made in screen print and sand on Arches 88 paper. The image is a single grain of sand, here from Popenguine in Senegal, but each sheet is physically made from many grains, so that one grain and a multitude sit in the same work. The edition follows on from the hyper-enlarged sand-grain sculptures Lee made with Phillip C. Reiner, being catalogued in the Wilhelmshaven works list as Segment_Popenguine_23-02, with 23-02 tying it to the 2024 Popenguine sculpture.

Research:
The edition grows out of the sculpture process. For those works, grains of 0.3 to 1 millimetre were scanned on a Zeiss X-ray microscope and then 3D-printed from sand, a single sub-millimetre grain becoming a piece around 200 kilograms, enlarged more than 850 times. The Popenguine grain came from that same fixed selection, but the print keeps its record of the grain while returning it to a flat sheet and to the hand process of screen printing.
