Sand – Fragments – Motion, 2024 – Jeewi Lee x Phillip C. Reiner

"Sand – Fragments – Motion" presents three sculptures from the ongoing Fragments series at Sexauer Gallery's showroom. Lee's three sand grain works rest on a single white pedestal; Katja Aufleger shows concurrently in the same space. The showroom format offers viewing conditions more intimate than those provided by the main gallery's Field of Fragments exhibition. Where the gallery installation foregrounded the contrast in scale between the smaller Fragments and the meter-high Proximity sculptures, the showroom concentrates our attention on the Fragments' tactile presence and material recursion: sand as both the subject and substance of the sculptures. Each grain is a carrier of geological memory as much as a unit in a depleting global resource. The exhibition ran concurrent with Field of Fragments. Each sculpture is a nano-CT scanned grain, 3D printed in the same material at 130-500x enlargement. The smaller format and concentrated presentation allow us to sustain our attention on individual grains – their surface topographies, fracture patterns, mineral traces – that the larger show distributes across multiple works and scales.
