You and I wandering on the snake’s tail, 2016 – Thilo Frank x Phillip C. Reiner

The pavilion presents a spiral-shaped structure consisting of a series of triangular wooden slats arranged around an empty circular center. Each equilateral triangle is placed slightly offset from the previous one, causing their tips to gradually rotate toward the base of the structure and disappear into the ground. Depending on the viewing angle, the sculpture reads as either floating above the grass or rising from the lawn. Visitors can move around and through the structure; perspectives shift with position. The spiral is built from equilateral triangles with a constant rotational offset between consecutive units so that the tips trace a smooth transition into the ground.

Research:
Each triangle is placed with a fixed rotational offset around the spiral axis so that the sequence forms a continuous band from the base to the top. The offset angle and triangle size set the pitch of the spiral and the rate at which the tips converge toward the centre. The algorithm positioned the triangles and checked clearances and structural stability for the wooden slats and cable fixings.
