Crystal Loop, 2017 – Thilo Frank x Phillip C. Reiner

36 individually suspended tetrahedra, arranged along a Möbius strip, hang in the atrium as a welcome arch for the Rødovre Centrum. Sunlight creates dynamic shadows and reflections across the group, which change with time and seasons. The tetrahedral forms trace the single-sided loop of a Möbius strip — a continuous path with no inside or outside. Part of the "Art in Architecture" program, the installation is a welcome element at the shopping center entrance. An LED system illuminates the structure and responds to the existing architecture and daylight.

Research:
A parametrized Möbius strip positions 36 tetrahedra along the single-sided loop without collision. Tetrahedron sizes vary according to local curvature and the desired visual rhythm. Each tetrahedron sits at a point on the strip, oriented relative to the strip's tangent; structural checks ensured suspension loads and clearances were feasible for the atrium.
