Fragments, 2024 – Jeewi Lee x Phillip C. Reiner

Research:
Each Fragment enlarges a single grain of sand up to several thousand times, then shapes it. There are 9 of them, open editions. The first edition was made in 2024; the open editions were brought in 2025. The grains come from the coasts Lee works with, from Korea to Senegal, Portugal, Mallorca, then to the coasts of New York and Connecticut. Each grain is preserved in the title of its work. This 2024 edition is made of quartz sand, art resin and mixed materials, the longest dimension running from 28 to 43 cm. After being blown and shaped, the surface of the grain becomes legible: a clear cut, a face curved by the water, a skin with weather pits. They were scanned on a Zeiss X-ray microscope in Essingen, printed in bound sand, and finished by hand. Less as if it is made than found.
