La Congiuntura, 2017 – Olafur Elíasson

A site-specific intervention at the Castello di Rivoli (Turin): geometric modifications were applied to existing windows, altering the boundary between interior and exterior. The intervention uses SuperCube-derived and phi-based modular geometry so that the new window elements relate to the building's proportions and sight lines. The modified openings change how light enters and how the exterior is framed, shifting the perceptual experience of the space without changing the building's load-bearing structure.

Research:
The design used SuperCube and phi-modular systems to generate window frames and infill geometries that fit the existing apertures. The analysis addressed how to subdivide each opening (or cluster of openings) so that the new geometry remained constructible and aligned with key viewing axes. Structural integration was limited to non-load-bearing elements; the study included fixings and tolerances for the historic fabric.
